Challenging for some, delightful for others. Tesla has officially announced that the automaker will drop two of the seven colors for all three of its models. Obsidian black and metallic silver will be offered as a special-order option.
The colors will not be moved to the special-order category immediately but through a quick phase-out period. Prospective buyers have until Thursday of this week to order at the regular price. After that, these colors will be available only via a "special request" at a price of $2,000. The move is tied to continued efforts to accelerate production of the Model 3. It was the paint process, particularly that had been creating bottlenecks.
The remaining color options are solid black, midnight silver metallic, deep blue metallic, pearl-white multi-coat, and red multi-coat. Elon Musk said Tesla is about to build and deliver more than twice as many cars as it did last quarter. During the three months that ended in June, Tesla produced 53,339 vehicles and delivered 40,740.
